• K-Beauty Routine for Oily Skin

by MISHIBOX Team March 21, 2017

Today’s blog post focuses on which products to use for those with oily skin!

I am Korean American, and by the virtue of that fact, K-Beauty was never a “new” thing for me--from stealing trying my mom’s skin care products as a teenager, to buying my very own IOPE Cushion Compact in college, I’ve always dabbled in K-Beauty. However, I always got the impression that K-Beauty did not fit my oily skin type well. The serums and essences seemed too thick or heavy, and the cushion compact made my face an oil slick by the first hour. You see, my skin is not just oily--it is SUPER oily! My make-up hardly lasted for more than 3-4 hours before experiencing a complete oily meltdown.

But two years ago, I stumbled upon the Cleomee Donkey Snowy Pore Balm through MISHIBOX. Amazingly, this product actually made my face less oily--a 180-degree change from what I had experienced with Korean beauty products!

Since then, I’ve discovered many products to fit into my skincare routine to control the shine and breakouts. My main skin care concerns are:  controlling oil and sebum during the day, minimizing breakouts, and minimizing the appearance of my pores.

Here is my morning skin care routine:

  1. Skin Watchers Enzyme Powder Wash with warm water. Rinse with cool water. Pat face dry (gently!) with a clean towel.
  2. 3-5 spritzes of Skylake Oriental Herb Relax Toner. I like this because it absorbs quickly and I can spray it onto my face directly. I am also a fan of Yadah Anti-T Toner.
  3. After the toner absorbs sufficiently (about 2 minutes), I apply my Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. I know what you’re thinking- “Hey, that’s not Korean!” But just because we’re into K-Beauty does not mean that ALL my products need to be Korean! Find the products that work for you!
  4. I wait about 5-10 minutes for the moisturizer to absorb, and then I apply my sunscreen, the Skin Watchers UV Success (Coming soon to the MISHIBOX shop). At first application, there is a slight white cast and shine, but these effects go away as it absorbs. I wait about 10 minutes for this to absorb.
  5. As my final morning skin care step, I apply the Cleomee Donkey Snowy Pore Balm as a primer. I use a dime sized amount and spread it all over my face, not just the t-zone. This product keeps my face from becoming super oily during the day, and provides a smooth surface to apply make-up, if I choose to do so. It also covers some imperfections and blurs out the appearance of pores. I recommend this product to everyone, including men, as it can help the appearance of your complexion without looking like you have make-up on.
  6. If I am getting a bit oily during the day, I blot with the Skin Watchers Natural Yam Oil Blotting Papers. If I am going for a more matte finish, I powder with MCC Perfect Finish Pore Pact. The MCC Perfect Finish Pore pact is pink in the pact, but colorless when applied onto skin.
Some notes about my skincare routine:
  1. I know a ton of people are raving about the 7-step or the 10-step skin care routine, and it seems like every other blog post or Instagram account is posting flat lays of the 10+ products they use in the morning. Personally, my skin can’t really take more than the 5 products that I’ve mentioned above. Don’t feel like you have to follow every popular beauty advice there is.
  2. Occasionally, if my skin feels a bit drier than normal after cleansing and toning, I add in the Soroci Soothing Skin Toner. I am obsessed by how this product smells- really clean, earthy, and refreshing, all at the same time.

That’s my morning routine in a nutshell! I’ll talk about my night time routine in a future post. What do you guys think? Do you have any questions or suggestions? Let us know by commenting below!
